Day-to-day Friction
Israel and Palestine
Violence grabs the headlines but what is day-to-day life like in Palestine? My understanding was dramatically changed by an article describing how it takes hours to go 15 miles through 5 or more checkpoints? Is this the extent of the issue ... or is ongoing humiliation the routine as claimed by the Palestinians? How many articles like these ever appear in your newspaper?

Last procession of pilgrims following Jesus march to Jerusalem: greeted by eight-metre-high concrete slabs
Guardian Unlimited | Special reports | e-mail: "e-mail | Jonathan Cook @ Beit Fagi | Monday April 5, 2004 | The Guardian

Yesterday a procession of pilgrims, each holding a palm branch, made their way up the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives from the Palestinian village of Eizariya, once the Biblical town of Bethany and home to Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha.

The annual procession follows the route of Jesus's triumphal journey to Jerusalem, ...
Despite its long history, however, yesterday's procession to Beit Fagi is likely to be the last for the forseeable future. As the pilgrims ascended a narrow path past Palestinian homes to the edge of the Catholic Passionisti Convent attached to Beit Fagi chapel they were greeted by a short but imposing stretch of wall, consisting of eight-metre-high concrete slabs.

UN relief agency says suspending food aid to 600,000 in Gaza: UN says suspension followed restrictions introduced by Israel
Haaretz - Israel News: "01/04/2004 15:47 | UN relief agency says suspending food aid in Gaza | By DPA

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced Thursday it stopped distributing emergency food aid to some 600,000 refugees in the Gaza Strip.

UNRWA said in a statement that the suspension followed restrictions introduced by Israel on the sole commercial crossing into Gaza through which it is able to bring in humanitarian assistance.

The agency said it had now completely run out of stocks of rice, flour, cooking oil and other essential products.

"Under normal circumstances, UNRWA delivers some 250 tons of food aid per day in Gaza alone as part of a wider program of emergency assistance to refugees, initiated shortly after the outbreak of strife in the West Bank and Gaza Strip in September 2000," the statement said.

Almost two out of three households in Gaza live below the poverty line and more than half its workforce is unemployed.

UNRWA said it urged Israel to loosen its restrictions in Gaza in a joint statement with other UN agencies on March, but thus far without success.
