Day-to-day Friction
Israel and Palestine
Violence grabs the headlines but what is day-to-day life like in Palestine? My understanding was dramatically changed by an article describing how it takes hours to go 15 miles through 5 or more checkpoints? Is this the extent of the issue ... or is ongoing humiliation the routine as claimed by the Palestinians? How many articles like these ever appear in your newspaper?

Israeli Broadcasting given 1 week to make Arab programs available without a satellite [many Israeli Arabs only speak Arabic]
Haaretz - Israel News: "22/01/2004 15:05 | Court tells IBA to make programs in Arabic available to all | By Anat Balint, Haaretz Correspondent

The High Court on Thursday gave the Israel Broadcasting Authority one week to find a way of making its Arabic-language channel available to non-satellite subscribers.

The ruling was handed down following a petition by the Musawa Center for Rights of Arab Citizens against the IBA, in light of a decision some 18 months ago by IBA director Yosef Barel to cancel the broadcast of Arabic-language programs on terrestrial television.

The programs were transferred to the Middle East satellite station, thereby making them available only to viewers with a satellite or cable television connection.

Kahane was assassinated by an Egyptian militant in New York in November 1990. He served a term in the Knesset in the 1980s, but his party was banned at the next election as racist.

Lapid will demand that the outpost be demolished by the Israel Defense Forces, and will investigate who gave approval for the road to be paved to the site, the report said.

The $1 million cost of paving the road to the illegal outpost is being paid by the state. ...
